Identifying Personal Data At Risk
Data is everything and everywhere in a modern organisation. Personal Data and Sensitive Personal Data about people that organisations rely on, is typically held in data stores that have additional security controls on top of the general IT environment. However, it is not unusual for personal data held in these secure systems to be extracted for business purposes eg backing-up, analysis etc. IPDAR (Identifying Personal Data At Risk) is a tool that identifies lost personal data in places where it (probably) should not be.
General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) regulations require all organisations conducting business in the European Union to take action against exposure of personal data by 25th May 2018. Organisations already compliant with the Data Protection Act 1998 in the UK will need to ensure that existing data handling methods meet the modern standards of the European Union regulations.
How does IPDAR work?
IPDAR is a tool that automatically scans files held in systems across your organisation, like emails or documents, and identifies those containing personal data records. IPDAR uses advanced search technology, a unique algorithm and method which is able to scan and report on up to 3 terabytes of data within a week, identifying the locations and risk posed by forgotten files containing personal data. All our findings are clearly presented in a report with full methodology and risk scoring system, which we follow up with a short workshop with to present and explain the findings
The IPDAR six-stage process looks like this:
